I've been living in Poland since December 2005, but still can't understand people speaking regular Polish at regular speed. It's a hard language.

Anna has a theory which seems true to me, that native English speakers have a lot of experience speaking English with non-native speakers, so many native English speakers know how to speak more slowly, clearly, simply as needed. But many Polish people have literally never spoken Polish with non-native speakers, so they don't know how to speak more slowly, clearly, simply with learners. Many times I've explained to people that I don't understand Polish well and they need to speak more slowly and simply, and they nod but then repeat what they said exactly the same way.
